So lets get to know Anna…
Have you always designed cakes, what’s your background?
No, my background is in IT marketing and event planning which I did for a very long time. I had always been a creative person who loved art and sculpture so really needed to find a creative outlet and I wanted to feel passionate about what I did. I kind of fell into cakes after making a cupcake tower for my son’s christening ten years ago and my love for cake design spiralled from there however I only took the plunge and started my business professionally in January 2019.
How would you describe your style?
My style is fine art contemporary. I love using textures and pushing myself with new techniques but it still has to be aesthetically beautiful. I’m also a very diverse cake artist as I love to work with a range of mediums rather than just one signature style.
Where do you get your inspiration from & have you found there is a current trend?
I’m inspired by art, ceramics, sculpture, architecture, fashion and floral design. I love to see a piece of art and try to work out how I can adapt something similar into cake art.
What’s your favourite style of cake to design?
Cakes with lots of texture really excite me but generally something that’s a bit different but still beautiful.
What information do you need to know when meeting with a couple for the first time?
Other than the key planning information (dates, venue etc.) I need to know how many guests will be attending the wedding, whether the cake will be served for dessert or as a coffee portion later in the evening, allergen information, plus it’s so useful to see any inspirational photos that will help guide me in designing a bespoke cake. The photos can be flowers, materials, art, architecture, the wedding dress etc.
What is your lead time?
Most of my couples tend to book 9-12 months in advance but some book even further in advance and some with much shorter notice. If you are considering using me as your cake designer it’s worth just dropping me an email to check my availability as soon as you’ve confirmed your date and venue.
How long does It usually take to create a bespoke wedding cake?
It can really vary depending on the style and complexity, if there are lots of intricate sugar flowers or texture effects it can take between 20-40 hours.
What do you love about working in the wedding industry?
Everything! The joy and excitement the couples have; being a small part of such a special day; making people smile with my cakes and finally collaborating with the wonderful suppliers in this industry. We all do this because we believe in the beauty of love and bringing happiness to people.
And finally, do you have a wedding cake that you have created that stands out for you?
One that really stands out for me was a beautiful white five tier cake with contemporary oversized flowers cascading down the front of the cake. It was part of a chic white and black dessert table and oozed glamour and style.
